Looking to move to the cloud? Only 6 cloud providers left. AWS on top, MS nipping at heals

Today there’s only 6 cloud providers in the game.  I predict that in 3 years or less there will be only 3 players left i.e., an oligopoly.  Below is the most recent data from Synergy Group to back up my assumption.

“Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains larger than its four main competitors combined in the cloud infrastructure service market. Microsoft can once again lay claim to having by far the highest revenue growth rate”

“…now six companies that can lay a valid claim to having annual cloud revenue run rates in excess of $5 billion – AWS, IBM, Microsoft, HP, Cisco and salesforce”

AWS Still Bigger than its Four Main Competitors Combined Despite Surging Growth

Microsoft Azure Fastest Growing Cloud, But That’s Not Saying Much

Microsoft Azure Fastest Growing Cloud, But That’s Not Saying Much

Microsoft Azure has made incredible progress over the past 2 years chasing the “big dog” Amazon AWS.  However, when you own a small percentage of the market, growth rates are misleading.

However, the growth of Azure does indicate Microsoft is clearly in second place and beating Google, IBM and Salesforce.  Like most pundits and bloggers, I believe it’s a 3 horse race between Amazon, Microsoft & Google.

Microsoft Azure Q3 Revenue up 136 Percent

Microsoft (MSFT) officially earned the No. 2 spot behind Amazon Web Services (AWS) in theinfrastructure-as-a-service(IaaS) market earlier this year, and according to the latest quarterly IaaS report from Synergy Research Group, the Redmond company is now showing the strongest year-to-year revenue growth in the biz.

For Q3, Synergy also named IBM as the third largest cloud operator. Big Blue currently claims a 7 percent market share.
